It could be the sprocket of the timing chain that is just touching the 
cover. Give the cover some gentle nudges and see if the sound of the 
noise changes. If not then it could be a hydraulic valve lifter.

Valve lifter noise can also come and go, depending on temperature, how 
long the car has been sitting etc.
