20 valve Quattro

A friend is looking at a couple 1990 20 valve Quattros.  Both are average
mileage (around 50K miles).  One of them has the "friction rings".  Both
are in the $17-20K asking price range.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on: what to look for, what to avoid, etc. with
the 20v.  Please respond directly to me, or cc me, as I'm no longer on
the Quattro list.
