Re: CPU-controlled '88 ur-Quattro WG?

Glen and Bill:

I've been reading your conversations on the flat spot/surges in your
5000CSQ turbos for a week or so and it suddenly dawned on me that I had
experienced a similar problem with my '83 turbo q coupe years ago. I could
never seem to get rid of it until I happened to need a new exhaust. The
center and rear mufflers were bad and were replaced with a straight pipe
after the catalyst and a quality "turbo" muffler at the rear with a single
pipe Ansa tip. I think the turbo muffler was a Dynomax, but it might of
been another relatively inexpensive, good quality unit. The flat spot on
boost at high revs and the occasional surge both disappeared completely,
never to be seen again. I never figured out whether it was a back-pressure
glitch in the US exhaust system or whatever, but the problems are gone with
the catalyst intact and everything else running fine. I have a friend with
a later model turbo coupe tha he brought in himself and he had a similar
experience.

Just thought you guys might like to look into that.
