  VW Concept 1 made a splash at the Detroit auto show. By year's end,

  CONCEPT 1 WILL BE BUILT!
    VW's Concept 1 has been approved for development and production by
  VW's Board of Management and will be available before the year 2000,
  most likely 1998. The decision came in response to the many appeals
  from enthusiasts all over the world who embraced the design study.
  Readers of this magazine (and the AudiWatch Update (Tm), Ed.) took
  an active role in letting VW know their desire to see the Concept 1
  brought to production. The response was similar to the deluge of
  calls that VW received about the VR6 Golf GTI which eventually
  made it stateside.
    The company said the US will be one of the primary markets for the
  car, however, much like the A3s, we won't see it unitl it has
  already spent a year or two in Europe. Apparently, VW is concerned
  about its reliability image in the States and would like to make
  sure the car is as close to trouble-free before it is released here.
  (What's that phone number again?) Early speculation is the car will
  be built in Mexico utilizing a Golf platform. VW has a choice of
  engines ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 liters they could use, but it may
  be that the Concept 1 will be the basis for an electric or
  electric/hybrid vehicle. (really too bad that Audi didn't listen
  as well to all our cries for the Quattro Spyder to go into production,
  Ed.)
