WRT lighting problems ... You've probably got a ground problem in back.  
It is fairly common for VW's & Audis to do this.  You can verify this by 
measuring the voltage from the taillight "ground" to the frame of the 
car (or the negative terminal of the battery).  You will probably see 
the ground voltage increase when you turn on the side lights.  If the 
ground is completely gone the lamps get their return through the lamps 
that are not illuminated.
