You hit the nail on the head Eric!

 I took apart the switches on the '88 and found severe pitting.  I was 
able to burnish the contacts to fix them, but the silly things are glued 
together.  I was not able to take them apart without messing up one side 
of the switch.  I saw an ad in Audi Motorist (I think) where they were 
selling switches cheap ($14 as I recall) so I bought a couple.
