The brake pad indicator is only a wire that runs through the pads in the 
front only. When the pads wear through the wire the circuit is broken and 
the light comes on.

What probably was your problem on both occasions was not worn pads but the 
wire that goes through and to the pads and has broken. Sometimes it
comes in contact again so the light will go on and off.

You just need a new wire, any wire will do. Maybe you have an old lamp 
and can use the wire off of that?

Replace the portion of wire that is in the wheel well as it will fatigue 
and break in several places.
