AudiWatch Update (Tm) #50 1-19-95
AUDI IN THE NEWS
----------------
1994 SCCA PRO RALLY REVIEW, SportsCar magazine, Feb '95,
front cover and pg 12-19
Choiniere/Becker (and Audi, Ed.) Successfully Defend Title
(beautiful full-cover color pic of the Quattro S2 Pro Rally car, Ed.)
.....the '94 SCCA Pro Rally series was not business as usual.....
Paul Choinere and Jeff Becker were back in their Audi Quattro S2.....
the "big four" of the '94 championship chase were the Porsche Carrera
4 of Jeff Zwart, the Mitsubitchy Eclipse of Henry Joy, the Audi Quattro
S2 of Paul Choiniere and the Ford Escort Cosworth of Carl Merrill.....
occasional interlopers that sent wake-up calls were the Audi Quattro S2
of Frank Sprongle.....(nice B&W pics of the S2, Carrera 4 and Escort, Ed.)
(see COMPETITION RESULTS for season points totals, Ed.)
WORLD NEWS, Autoweek, Jan 5, '95
WHAT HAS 5 cyliners, a turbo, makes 240 HP and rides on Pirelli
PZeros? It's the new Volvo T5-R wagon, Ed.
See Autoweek, Jan 5, '95 pgs 4-5, Can you say RS-2?
COMEBACK TRAIL pg 6-7
If you're going to cruise the comeback trail, why not do it in a
Porsche?
After loosing $286 million over the last three years, Porsche AG will
break even this year, and will be profitable by the end of fiscal '95,
chairman Wendlin Wiedeking said.
Compared with the previous year, sales were up 35% WW and 60% in the US.
Wiedeking has earned praise for bringing Porsche back. VW chairman
Ferdinand Piech has called Wiedeking the best chief executive in the
audo business.
Porsche will show the Carrera RS at the Amsterdam show later this
month, and the 911 Turbo (all AWD, Ed.) at Geneva next march and the
Boxter in '96.

MEXICAN BEETLE BUMPED
No Longer Top Seller There
The VW Beetle, Mexico's top-selling car for may years, has been
passed by the Nissan Sentra (Tsuru). Nissan cut $1,300 off the price
in early '94, giving the Sentra a $7,800 base.
But VW de Mexico has no plans to halt Bug production. As one VW
dealer put it, "It's a reliable car. It's tough and holds up well
against Mexico's bad roads. I've heard some people in rural Mexico
use the car to plow fields. It's like the Model T was in America."
Below are the Beetle's annual sales in Mexico for the past four years.
YEAR SALES
94 78,233
93 97,539
92 85,989
91 86,353

HALF A GRAPH IS BETTER THAN NONE
How ironic. A month after the season ends, we get a nice article
about how little media coverage PRO Rally receives ["The Secret Sport,"
AW, Dec 19, '94]. Don't you know, AUTOWEEK devotes half a paragraph
every month or so. Of course, final standings were absent from the
previous issue's "1994 in Review." Secret sport indeed.
SOMETIMES IT TAKES FIVE YEARS TO MAKE A PIECE OF BREAD AND BUTTER,
AW, Nov 21, '94 pg 16-17
Watch out, BMW and Mercedes; Audi is coming on strong with the
stylish new A4
(2-page feature article, B&W pics, Ed.)
.....174 HP 2.8L V6.....100 Lbs lighter than the 90.....feels as
exclusive as many luxury cars twice its price.....A sporty version
of the A4--probably badged S4--likely will be introduced next fall
in Frankfurt.....a formidable force in the luxury car market and
a challenge for BMW and Mercedes for years to come.
NEW AUDI PARTS SOURCES & SERVICES and ELECTRONIC COUNTERMEASURES
----------------------------------------------------------------
COMPANIES *NOT* TO DO BUSINESS WITH
-----------------------------------
European Traffic aka Mid-Atlantic Automotive
Parts screw-ups, shipping screw-ups, credit-card billing before parts
actually ship, poor service, as reported on the .net
SUPERCHIPS, grossly misleading advertising claiming CPU chip upgrades
where, in fact, no CPU chip reprogramming is done in many applications,
as discussed at great length on the .net
