Sorry no pro rally experience here, but I do drive both a fwd 80 and a
an 89 200 Q . The 80 wears hakkas and the 200Q has Nokia NRWs.
The snow tires were a must as my wife (who uses the Q as her daily
driver) swapped ends one day after we took ownership, something
she never did in her fwd Grand Am. Its a no brainer that I can swing
the back end easily on the Q if I try. The torsen system must be
helping some, as even when I go out and push the envelope I find I can
use the throttle (with some steering corrections) to maintain an adequate
line though a curve(part of my parking lot exercises). But I'm not trying
to drive at the adhesion limit, so I try to keep my speed where I know I
can handle a bad spot or two in a turn (I leave the macho snowmanship
to the SUVs). All in all, I can probably drive faster in the 200Q than the
80 given snowy conditions, I just don't in most cases ("wouldn't be
prudent").
But tires are definitely the best place to start to improve handling.
