AudiDudi et al.
I noticed this as well. I worked on a friends 84 4000Sq and his 87
4000CSq. The 84 was just a typical 13mm bolt on the hold down clamp, but
when we went to adjust the 87, we found that stupid rivet like thing holding
a cover down. We managed to bang the cover enough to swivel it out of the
way and get at the actual bolt. Funny thing was, this rivet thing wasn't a
rivet. It actually threaded into the dist. clamp. We managed to get it out
with a pair of vice grips. Never cease to be amazed at some of audis
stranger engineering feats...

This past Saturday, while I was changing plugs and plug wires, I decided to
bump the timing as I did with my '85 4000. I was surprised to see that the
distributor was not readily adjustable (I had to chisel off a rivet holding
a cover over the distributor clamp bolt) but pleased with the results ... I
wonder if I'll be able to get away with this come summer?
