"Tap, Tap" is coming back...maybe I'll have a good chance at recording it
and we can put it on the Web Page! ;-) As a reminder to those who are new
or don't remember the thread, my 90Q makes a loud TAP TAP noise which is
not lifters, does not appear to be temperature related, and is definitely
speed related...noticable at idle not a cruise. It's embarassing, as
people look at me as if the car is going to explode. Turns out that the
vacuum pump fills with oil (either through worn push-rod, seals, ?) and the
pump will hydrostatically "lock" for just a moment. When it releases, the
large return spring in the pump forces the push-rod onto the cam,
regardless of where the cam is in it's rotation, producing a loud TAP, TAP
noise until all is well again.
Anyway, I'm going to investigate a drain setup for the pump...it would
require drilling a hole in the housing, adding a fitting and a check valve
so the pump would drain back into the engine when the engine was off but
not "short out" the pump by venting to atmosphere.
Meanwhile, I will try and record it and plan to drain it again. I think I
did the initial drain in October(?), so the fix is temporary to say the
least.
