Re: Audi Tool Info?

I was following your response to Steve's idle diagnostics and saw your
glowing recommendation for a Sun Pro meter. Could it be, at long last, a 5cyl
tach/dwell meter with duty cycle capability? My price range is about Sears
level, but no one but Snappy has one to sell me. Any info on
price/availability/model number would be appreciated! I'm in NH.

Did you see Steve's (? I think it was Steve) who replied with the specific
info? I think that's the same unit as mine - 7678? I can [try to remember
to] check when I get home if need be . . .

Specifically, has dwell, duty cycle, 4/5/6/8 cyl low [0-1999] and high
rpm [x10 -- I suspect 19,990 rpm is adequate for any Audi app!], Ohm
[0-200/2K.../20M I think], and DC volts [0-.2/2/20/200]. LCD readout,
auto shutoff. Oh yeah, I think it has continuity (feeps at you) too?

I seem to remember substantially more than $100, but that might be in-
cluding the temperature probe I bought along with it (for measuring
water temp, etc., *NOT* exhaust temp).

For all I know, SunPro makes 87 slightly different models . . . I know
there was one other cheaper one, but it didn't have the duty cycle
reading.

I bought mine -- on impulse, actually -- at a big auto parts/discount
type of place, don't even remember the name. If I'd known that Sears
had them, I would have bought it there (especially it 'twere cheaper!).

Highly recommended.

About my only complaint about the unit was the "silly" cables supplied -
the probe ends are alligator clips (not exactly, as alligator clips open
like the jaws of an alligator [get it?], and these are more like butt-end
clips, or bulldog clips, or ??? what do you call those damn things?). I
bought a nice "cable set" at a local electronics parts store for another
$15 or so, gives me pointy-probe with a bunch of screw-on adapter ends,
like alligator clips, and little tiny "scope probe" clips.

The SunPro unit uses the new-fangled recessed/shielded bananna connectors,
but fortunately old style bananna plug-equipped cables work also.
