I had this problem on my '85 Golf. It seems that VW decided the
internal door weather seal wasn't really needed in most of the
cars they made in the mid 80's. As a result, corrosion made the
mechanisms stiff, sticky, and unreliable. I replaced a couple
of handles, and a couple of linkages.
What you need to do to *fix* it is to replace the linkages,
lube everything with something appropriate, and place the
VW part#'d plastic sheet inside the door. The dealer fiches
probably show this part. There may even be a hidden recall on it.
