On the actuator motor sometimes the potentiometer that senses the lever/motor position goes open
circuit due to the potentiometer wiper contact having too much contact resistance. The systems
op-amp "thinks" the lever is in the correct position. Knudging the lever slightly makes the connection
again and then the motor starts running to move the lever.
You can add a 680K ohm resistor between the center leg and the ground connection of the potentiomter
so that the center wiper never goes open. My friend at GM said this was a fix for the GM Cadillac
climate control systems that had this same problem. I added the resistor on my car and it does not
have the problem any more.
Other causes include the motor brushes being intermittant or the motors gear reduction is worn .
