First of all, check/clean all of the connections to the oil pressure
seonsor which should be located on the oil filter mount or somewhere
close to it. Second, don't take the oil capacity in ANY book for truth.
Some list capacity without a filter change, some with a filter etc. How
does the oil level look on the stick with the engine *cold*? You may be
just a little low on oil. If it was low, it would present the problems
of starvation in hard turns as you have mentioned.

Leaking valve stem seals would only use a little bit of oil, not a lot.
They are most noticable when first starting the engine, it will smoke a
little at startup. What type/weight of oil are you using?
The only person I know of that has found an oil pan other than a stock
one is Ti Kan, who is also on this list. It was some sort of rare Euro
piece which I would think very hard to find. The VW pans do NOT
interchange due to the difference in engine placement.(long. vs transverse)
Maybe someone else knows of a hi capacity pan for the 4k series?

I hardly think it sacrilege as the motor in your car right now is more VW
than it is Audi. The 1.8L would surely give you more power than the 1.7,
especially if you had it rebuilt. The only concerns are engine
management and wiring, which shouldn't be a big problem anyhow. How much
work do you want to do?
