help w/4ks halfshafts

So after 141k miles the halfshafts on my '85 4ks (non-q)
seem somewhat tired. The cv joints make all sorts of noise when
steering into and out of parking spaces, and freeway driving has
been not exatly vibration-free.

I went down to the local Auto Parts Club and ordered two of TRW's
22054R reman halfshaft assemblies; they're cheaper than two each
of inner joints, outer joints and boots. Imagine my surprise when
I noticed that the bolt pattern on the inner end was a few millimeters
*smaller* on the TRW parts than the driver's side halfshaft I had pulled!
I know the application should be correct--I actually saw it in the
TRW catalog. Sooo, either my car (or stub axles) is/are unusual, or Audi
made a change and didn't tell anyone, or ??????

I called the TRW tech line to confirm dimensions. The overall length
was exactly the same for both parts, so I was concerned about the inner
end bolt pattern. There are 6 bolts, in an ~89mm diameter circle. Bolt
holes are in three groups of two, ~44mm between two holes in one "set."
The TRW guy didn't have prints listing those dimensions, so had to track
down an engineer and call me back. When he called back he said the engineer
said that Audi made a running change to '85 4ks's and started using
*5000* halfshafts at some point in the production run!!??!!

Does anyone know about this? The TRW parts that are supposed to work are
222204R driver's side and 222205R passenger side. This really confuses
me because I thought the 4000 has equal-length halfshafts, which these
obviously aren't... I do seem to remember a running model-year change
and two corresponding p/n's in the TRW catalog for '85 Coupe's, but not
'85 4ks's. Maybe those changes apply to '85 4ks's as well?

FWIW, the part number printed on the existing driver's side halfshaft is
811 407 311 270891 111 (don't know how much exactly is the correct p/n)
and 013355B on the inside of the stub axle. The TRW guy wasn't able to
cross-reference the VW p/n from the halfshaft...

Any ideas as to the correct TRW part number(s) for my application? Since
APC's computer seems to be wrong, it's gonna be a bit of a hassle convincing
the parts guy to order me the correct parts this time. I want to make
sure and get it right...

Hey, if it were *easy*, we wouldn't be Audi owners, right :-)??!!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Marty
