If it is the same setup as in 86, it is not spring but a broken servo mount.
Linda at Carlsen faxed me the service bulletin some time ago, and it states
that the Air/Recirc flap seal gets stuck and breaks the servo mount (I checked,
and this is what happened in my car). She sold me the repair kit (flap seal,
servo bracket, some screws) for something like $10.  I haven't installed it
yet, but it looks like a simple task.
