I've messed with linkages on both FWD & AWD Audi transmissions without 
the tools.  If you look in the manual you can see by the pictures what 
the tool is trying to do and do it manually (or at least I've been able 
to do so acceptably well).  I'm not sure when the linkage changed, but 
it was around '85-'87.  The older linkage had some rubber and soft plas-
tic pieces that deteriorate over time.  Your problem may be that there 
is excessive play due to this deterioration.  The linkage is pretty easy 
to access on the FWD cars ... go in there and see what is going on down 
under.
