I owned one myself, have another in the garage, know two other owners,
and my brother has over 50K miles on his 1993 already. Of these
five vehicles, only my housemate's 90S had any problems; those both
involved the computer detecting problems that would not have been
noticed otherwise: one with the EGR valve and one with the idle
regulator. Both were fixed on the first try.
Mine never missed a beat, never hesitated, hiccuped or stalled, and had
a rock-steady idle, which is more than I can say for any other car I've
ever owned; they all had a glitch--however minor--at some point in
time.
While this engine does not get great press in the US, it is highly
praised in Europe because its quietness and abundant low-end torque
makes it well-suited for high-end sedans. Mercedes is apparently
impressed, because they are now working on a V6 that is to have similar
characteristics.

What hydraulics? The '92-on 100s are totally conventional; there's
no pump.
