3 one second cranks arent any easier on the battery than one 3 second crank. The battery couldnt care less. The 3 second timer only protects the starter motor itself, to prevent overheating of the field. Lead acid batteries dont mind large amp draws for that short of time. (I would try to avoid it for several minutes draw though...)
Would seem to be more wear and tear on the starter with a lot of little cranks.
