Blown Turbo in 87ktq

      After seeing white smoke coming from my tail-pipe, I received the 
diagnosis I would need a new [rebuilt] turbo. Any major cautions I should 
communicate to my mechanics before they start this job? The car has about 
70k on it and I dropped it off at the shop in the middle of only our 
second significant snowfall all year! It only added to my depression 
thinking about the bill as I boarded the public transport.
      Also what kind of preventative maintenance can I take in the future?
