Trans problem (cont.)

Hello again,

Thanks for all the info on my transmission problem in my 1990 80Q.
My engine oil level was fine (between the two marks on the dipstick),
and I couldn't find a large Allen wrench over the weekend to open 
the transmission fill plug. The oil on the transmission did not have
the strong odor that everyone has talked about (for gear oil).
So I took it to a local mechanic with a German accent for an estimate.

He told me that he'd have to drive it home tonight to get it good
and hot, and then he could diagnose it. He also said that the engine 
oil and gear oil were the same viscosity?! 

Is that possible? Is he perhaps faking the accent?
