R134a conversion kit for 5kt?

One of the reasons I'm looking for another Audi is the a/c system on mine 
never worked since I bought the car 3 yrs ago.  I changed the compressor 
clutch with a rebuilt unit but the compressor is bad and I guess I will need a
new evaporator/dryer.  The Nippondenso compressor is  difficult to find and 
buying one used (~$350), who knows how long it will last so instead of 
spending over $1k to fix this, I'm considering converting over to an R134a 
system at similar cost, hopefully.   I know I have to change all the lines and
the systems are not compatible.  Has anyone looked into doing this and at what
cost?   If I find another car before summer, the 5KT will become our winter 
beater and then I won't bother with fixing the a/c.
