ABOUT THE SPORT (PRO Rally) R&T, March, '95 pg 124-125
.....As if we needed a warning.....an approaching rally car announces
itself....."Rrrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr! Pow! Pow, Pow, Pow, Pow!".....
It is the sound of ingenuity in action-the report created by raw
fuel exploding as it hits the red-hot vanes of the turbocharger.
You see, some years ago Audi discovered that you could overcome
turbo lag by squirting gasoline into the air intake system
(technically wrong, I think they mean into the exhaust system, Ed.)
just upstream from the turbocharger (turbine side, Ed.). When the
gas ignites, the ensuing series of backfires keeps the turbo spinning
after the driver has bacaked off the throttle. This makes the engine
more responsive and life a lot easier for teh rally driver who uses
mostly the throttle to position the car.....It was at once awesome
(standing just a few feet away from a 2450-lb. rally car hurling
mud and rocks does get your attention). And anticlimatic (after the
cars had gone by, it felt as if the circus had just left town).....
These days, most top-seeded rally cars are both turbocharged and
equipped with all-wheel drive.....(It's now 1995, who had turbos and
AWD waaaaaaaaaay back in the very early 1980s? Ed.)

BABY AUDI TO DEBUT IN 1996, EC, March '95, pg 24
Fresh off the recent introduction of the A4, Audi's next new car is set to
debut in '96. Called
the A3 and based on a stretched VW A3 chassis, the baby Audi will be more
luxurious and
generously equipped. Both five-door adn three-door versions are expecetd.
Styling will
retain trademark Audi design cues as you can see from the computer-generated
photo.

GOLF COUPE ON THE WAY, pg 24
The next-gen GOlf, which will be introduced in late '96, will also spawn a
sport coupe
version that will mimic BMW's Compact theme: affordability and simplicity. The
coupe
will use existing components and drivetrain from the next-gen Golf. It is also
rumored
that VW will resurrect the Scirocco name for this new coupe or another design
using
the new platform.

Audi will be racing in three continents in '95-none of which is NA. Aside
from the hi-profile
teams in Germany and Italy's touring car series, Audi importers in Australia
and SA will
also be racing in the world-wide Super Touring category. Hans Stuck will be
back for Audi
in the DTM racing new Audi A4s.
