no -  the check valve keeps oil in the filter. without it, it takes longer
to build up
pressure at start up.  I don't think that the oil in the filter is kept
under pressure.

I've been using bosch filters lately. the local parts store sells them for 
less than a $4!  I don;'t know much about them, but given Bosch's reputation
I think they must be ok/good!
