Re: Alignment techniques

The Bentley manual for my 82 Coupe calls for a special tool that physically
bolts to the steering rack to center it. Last time I checked, it was about
$54 from Zelenda. The older 5 cylinder cars like mine had adjustable linkage
on both sides. The older four cylinder cars were only adjustable on one side.
This means that the steering wheel had to be removed and replaced to be
centered on the 4 cylinder 4000s. Most shops do not do a good alignment
job on Audis and some refuse to do Audis. I have gotten the best alignments
from the dealer and 95% at a local shop. A competent shop that does not
have the special tool should have a holding fixture for the steering wheel,
but this is only as good as the origional hand centering of the steering wheel.

I am interested in DIY alignments if any one has more info.
