I tried to record mine this weekend, but it knew what I was doing and
refused to cooperate. Soon!

I posted a long message on this. Is it in the Quattro archive? If not,
I'll look to see if I have it. But, yes...the vacuum pump had a good deal
of oil in it...and my theory is that this oil prevents the check-valves
from opening and closing properly. The vacuum built up in the pump does
not release the shaft until the cam has rotated around some...the vacuum
releases...and "clack!" the shaft comes out and hits the cam.

The "clack" is definately 1 clack/rev so it rules out lifters almost
immediately.

Dan Simoes teased me by saying he's got p/n's for replacement seals and
shaft for the vacuum pump but never gave me any more details! He hinted
that it was fairly cheap...ie. $20 range. Dan..you listening? ;-)
Anyway, new shaft and seals may prevent the oil from getting into the pump
in the first place. Draining the pump is easy and seems to cure the noise
for about 4-5 months.

If it's not copyrighted (or you don't care about such things), put it up on
ciombra so we can all look at it! Gifs or jpgs are preferred, I think.
