Re: AIR BOXing

>Chad, first of all, I did the airbox mods on my 77 scirocco. It worked
very well, however, we are talking about an antiquated (although very
nice) injection system <
Your basic cis without the O2 and freq valve, but not as antiquated as you'd
think.... Like thru 89 on the 5ktq

.>The airboxes on most Audis ARE NOT TUNED. I cant
say for sure about the newer audis, but the 5000's and <91 100's are not.<

Ok.... Whatever, when I see it in caps you must be right... Me, I got a 5k
with tuned airbox..... Me thinks a look at 1) the fact that the filter fins
can only be mounted one way (K&N or any stock filter), and 2) a lot of fancy
curves and air channels in the box itself, and 3) interesting that the
scirocco has no horn (my three didn't) but the audis do, and hmmmmm they're
different sizes (length vs dia) on different apps, the most interesting being
the S4 to 5ktq.... A few things to capitalize on......

>Figure on this.....if they were tuned, including the air horn, wouldn't
the filter scram all that tuning work anyway? <
No, not necessarily. Lets look at your exhaust as a good example.... you
take a 2 1/2 inch exh from the man, go to a 6inch catalytic converter
(honeycomb style is an excellent example of your filter) then back to the 2
1/2 exhaust, do we not pay attention to both sides of the cat in this
example, for maximum flow characteristics? Is the cat throwing all the work
you did before OR after it null and void? And will "modifying" the cat (air
box) with a tuned "test pipe" not going to give you better flow? The theory
for air will work the same way on the intake side, me thinks......

> You can't tune through a filter<
hmmmmmm I'll take the argument, me I'm just workin on it, and testing with
some successes, not sure I'd pop for the capital disagreement with you here,
just think you might be missing some oportunities with that statement

>ammounts
of air directly into the airbox on my race car. Around 100 mph, coming
into a long curve, i hit a headwind that not only buffeted to car, but
also the airflow sensor, giving me periodic rich conditions being put
through my combustion chamber. It would load up pretty bad<

Agree on a cis system one must be careful to have the air available but not
necessarily sealed..... Ram Air is hard to have to this degree, tho not
impossible, I will add (sounds like an "s" spoiler with a hose to the duct to
me <:~))....... however, Ram Available Air might be a better definition of
the term, and thinkin a route by the cool side of the turbo or the intake
manifold might be a convenient place to "dump" the excess ram air.....

Some pennies for thought....
