Re: Speed Limits
The intro from our new member from Boulder, via SA (sorry, I've blanked
on the name) brought to mind a rather simple question. Does anyone
remember driving on roads in the good ol' Yew Ess of Aye *without* a
speed limit? I mean actually without a speed limit, not having an
unenforced speed limit.
I do. When I was a youngster, oh so many years ago :-(, the speed limit
on Missouri highways was "Reasonable and Proper" which meant, in effect,
if you survived, it was reasonable and proper. You couldn't be stopped
for speeding alone. The ossifer had to be prepared to prove you were
driving in either an unreasonable or an improper manner. That's a whole
different kettle of fish than having to prove you were driving 56 in a
55 zone. That was before the days of interstate highways. The
roads even had high crowns and curbs! Wouldn't it have been fun to have
a nice 300 hp Audi Quattro in those days? (See, I worked the obligatory
reference in!)
Kansas used to be 80mph on the interstate, and Nevada was the Reasonable
and proper bit. My mom and I never did quite agree on what that meant . . .
