Yep, it's for the mechancal FUEL pump.
Aren't you glad that you don't have two timing belts to change?

Did it have a manufacturer or a part number on it. I'd love to find one
of these for my diesel. Mine has a cork gasket and two little orangish
rubber inserts at each end above the cam. It leaks a lot, mostly
because so many idiot mechanics have over tightened my valve cover. The
first time I took it off, it was bent down about 1/16" every place a
stud went through. So I tried to flatten it. I wish it wasn't made of
sheet metal. I bet there's a cast one on later models or maybe
available from Europe. Mabye even a big chrome plated one that says
Edelbrock on it...oops wrong car.
