CO poisoning...
Recently, I got some flack from a couple of people on the Quattro list about
my being ultra-cautious and recommending against side-exit exhausts on a car
that will be driven on the street with the windows up. Perhaps this message
from the wheel-to-wheel list will put my concerns in the proper perspective:
>For those of you who saw Kurt's erratic driving and later collapse in the
>pit lane at Lime Rock this weekend, a short update:
>
>He was already feeling somewhat better by the time he got to the hospital
>and was being treated for heat exhaustion when he mentioned that his eyes
>had been kind of stinging from the fumes in his car. The doc ran a test for
>carbon monoxide poisoning and all but sent Kurt up to the intensive care
>unit when it came back at 33 percent (this, 30-45 minutes after he had been
>pulled out of the car and breathing fresh air). After 3.5 hours on oxygen,
>he was back down to the level of 3-pack-a-day smokers, and they let him go
>home.
>
>He's fine. We thank everybody who helped out (Danny Fisher, Fran Dance,
>Wilson Wright, medical responders, flaggers, etc.) and Kurt extends
>preliminary apologies to all whom he screwed up, pushed off the track and/or
>bumped. He literally does not remember the last lap or two of the race and
>has limited recollection of about the last half of the race. The in-car
>video is the scariest thing I've ever seen.
>
>More complete report to follow.
