Hmmm, I don't know Norm, My 83 coupe GT was wired just like yours,(from 
the factory) - no accessory position and no radio without the key on.( i 
changed it) When audi went to the theif (and owner) proof radios they 
had power supplied to them continuosly. I'm not sure why this was 
necessary. There should be a memory/clock feed going to your radio that 
is hot at all times. You could upgrade the fuse and connect the main 
radio power to this at the same time. While you have your radio out you 
should be able to tell if it was in fact rewired or if your car is just 
of the earlier format. good luck,
