5k Battery - Thanks

Thanks to everyone for your input on the battery questoin I posted.

The consensus is that the mechanic may have been slightly exaggerating the
battery appetite.  

For me the next steps are to:

1. Check the alternator for output during high usage.
2. Check the starter.

If the alternator is bad, can I put one in from an '89 or newer 100? It seems
they have more output based on comments posted. My car is a 1988 5000Q
non-turbo.
