Re: Cold strating problems, etc.

You prolly have a faulty or bad connection at the cold start temp sensor,
it's the one that faces the rear of the car where the MFTS is located and has
two prongs on it, it is rated at 15C and controls the cold start
injector...... You may want to make sure that the connection is still good
since you have an 86...

The other thing driving me nuts is the instrument lights. If I turn the
headlights on after the car is running, The whole dashboard goes dark (not
always, but maybe 8 times out of 10). I can shut the ignition off, shut the
lights off, turn the lights back on and then restart the engine. At this
point, I have all instrument lights except the computer readout. A couple
well placed taps on the instrument cluster will bring this around, but I
know it's not good for the instruments or my knuckles. This seems to be
some kind of loose connection or bad relay or something, but I am nervous
about blindly ripping out the dash looking for some needle in der haystack.

There are two sets of lights for the instrument panel, 2w (white holder) for
the computer and clock daytime readout and 1w (black holder) for the nightime
driving (dash dimming) lights..... Sounds to me like you need to replace the
bulb at the back of the computer (black base).... Unfortunately you have to
pull the steering wheel the access stalk and then yank the panel to get to
it..... Tried to from the back once, but it wasn't fun...... For some
reason there are specific bulbs that need to have current thru them for the
other lights to work..... Also, while you're in the cleaning mode, make sure
the contacts for the license plate lights are clean and corrosion-free,
another anomoly of Audis is that the LP circuit can cause havoc a lot of
other places....... HTH
