re: Audi on Pikes Peak?
Mark,
The '95 program I have for the Pikes Peak "Race to the Clouds" does not
list any Audi entries (sad). I went up to check out Pikes Peak the day
before the race but was unable to camp out on the mountain and watch
the race the next day.
There is a World Wide Web site that has all the results from the 95
race. It is located at http://www.MotorCity.Com I could not find any
Audis listed in the results either. Steve and Dave Beddor from the
Quattro club drove a RUF Porsche at the race but apparently did not
run any Audis. (shame on them)
I stopped by the Pikes Peak gift shop/museum hoping to see some Audi
vehicles on display but alas there were only a few old photos and posters
showing Audis participation in the event. I watched an in-car video from
last years race (incredible!) and the gift shop indicated that this years
video would be available in a few weeks. The gift shop/museum address is
Race to the Clouds
135 Manitou Ave.
P.O. Box 6962
Colorado Springs
CO, 80934
(719) 685-4400
Last years winner winner was a Toyota Celica in the
Unlimited class driven by Rodney Millen (time 10:04:06).This year it
looks like Nobuhiro Tajima won in a 1994 Suzuki with a time of 7:52.97
over Rod Millen at 7:53.67. This years results seem to indicate that the
course was shortened. I would guess that the weather was a problem as this
past week they had snow and clouds/fog at the top.
I drove (at 10-30MPH) up to the top (14,110 ft) of Pikes Peak which gave
me a great perspective on how "insane" it must be driving up this 12.42
mile (156 Turns) narrow dirt road with no guardrails at speeds exceeding
100MPH.
Talk about turbo lag! My 86 5000CS T ran fine but felt like I was dragging
a cement truck behind me at lower RPM's.
I was getting dizzy and light headed walking around in the gift shop at
the 14,110 ft summit from the lack of O2.
That's all for now.
