Good luck from the Audi god??
I just thought I would pass this little tidbit along, especially after
reading about some of these outrageous repair bills.
My '88 5kCST had gradually started running bad. It was almost impossible
to start in the mornings and felt like it wanted to die whenever I really
got on the accelerator. Turns out my accordian hose that runs from the
intercooler to the turbo intake had a 1.5 inch wide gash on the bottom
side, so I had never even noticed it. My Audi dealer buddies told me that
was probably the cause of all my problems, and that I needed a new hose.
Price was $130 for a new one, so needless to say, me and my car limped out
of there quick. Time to hit the salvage yards, I thought to myself...
So today I go out and find a good hose without any leaks or cracks off an
'86 5kCST and take it over to the guys who run the place and ask the price.
I figured they would give me some high amount, but they let me have it for
$10. Guess they thought it was just a radiator hose or something
unimportant. Needless to say, I paid my money and ran outta there very
excited.
Well, when I go to put it on the car, I find the part number is one digit
off from my original hose. Turns out my turbo end was shaped like an "egg"
on the original, and the "new" one was perfectly round on both ends. Hmm,
wonder if I can stretch it a bit and make it work? You better believe it,
I got it on there, clamped it on tight and went out for a test run. WOW!
I couldn't believe the difference! It was like a totally different rocket,
er...car. I have only had the car for a few months, and I guess this hose
had been slowly deteriorating, causing a vaccuum leak that was robbing me
of performance. I had no idea that hose was so vital a part...
Anyways, I sure am glad the Audi gods directed some of their attention
towards me, albeit in a most un-Audi (cheap) way :)
BTW, why are the turbo intakes different shapes on the two model years?
Did Audi use a different turbo manufacturer, or is it just another way for
them to make money on two different accordian hoses?
