Speaking as an Anthropologist, here is a brief history on economic history:

1.  Barter  (I'll trade you two pigs for that cow)

2. Gold/jewels (I'll give you two diamonds for that pig)

3. Monetary (I'll give you three dollars for that pork chop)

The most advanced of all is the following:
