Convert Auto to Manual?

OK, friends, the options are narrowing.  The automatic trans. in my 
1990 200T is fast headed for the last roundup.  I've been trading 
email with a couple of other folks on this list with the same year 
car - their trannies are also failing, but mine's the worst, so I get 
to be the experimental case.  (Many of my friends would say this is 
already a true statement...)

I'm either in for a total trans. rebuild at 63K miles - or?......

Has anyone on this list converted a 5-cyl Audi from automatic to 
manual?  Or, do you know someone who has done so and might discuss 
the idea with me?  Both I and my wife like 5-speeds.

I'm looking at somethere between an $800 and $1500 hit on this 
transmission deal...and that gets me in deep enough to consider such 
an option, especially if I can go the wrecking yard route for 
tranny, bell housing, flywheel, etc.  If any of you can comment, or 
know someone I can talk to, please forward email or a phone number  - 
I'll call on my dime.
