Here's my guess on this mystery:
First there were 4000 sedans and Coupe GTs,
each with their respective VIN model designations.
The ur-Q was the first Quattro and was
a "coupe" bodystyle. The 4000Qs are
based on the ur-Q floorpan, to support the Quattro
drive, so Audi may have simply carried over the
existing "Coupe" VIN extraction for the 4000Qs.
Seems to make sense.....
