Lime Rock Summary
Well, it was interesting. As soon as I got there I was drooling.
Quattros, quattros, everywhere! The bad part was that I was just
there to watch and that it was a bit difficult to find something
to watch (more later).
Getting there: from Danbury, CT, I took route 7, which is very
scenic but also 30mph. Talk about a slow ride :(. I'll get better
directions next time. At least it was a gorgeous day for a drive.
Cars: lots of TQCs, some really nice, including a 1983 with 38k miles
that was for sale. Ironically, the guy lives in my town, and I've
never seen the car before. I pointed the car out to Kent Anderson
and I think he may end up getting it.
People: most people seemed to fall into 2 categories: a) I'm here
because I love quattros and cars in general and I want to drive
fast and have a blast, and b) I live in the city and I've got this
quattro you see, so I'm here to learn about my car and driving in
general. This is my interpretation of course...
Many people seemed to be sharing a car.
Events: the morning was a combo of track time, slalom and skidpad.
Nick Craft can give you a better summary of what it was like
out there. I don't think that everyone drove like in a parade,
though I did chuckle at the woman who said "You keep talking about
downshifting. I have an automatic, should I leave it in Economy
mode or change it to Sport?" The answer she got was "well, this is
a racetrack, so put it in sport of course!" :)
In most cases, outside the track everyone drove slowly. The slalom,
for ex, was meant to be run at 20mph in 2nd gear.
Kent Anderson: very interesting, friendly guy. He knows his cars -
the TQC that looked flawless was revealed to have been hit in the
right rear quarter, and had a hood with rust just waiting to pop out.
This guy knows his cars! We chatted a bit about the list, cars
in general (he recommended either a 4000 or a 90Q20v for me) and
Ned Ritchie. He had a trailer with 3 cars totalling 9 tons. They
weren't quite sure if they would be able to cross the bridge leading
to the park, but they made it.
Women: I was amazed to see women driving (bear with me!). It's just
that I could not imagine my wife doing this type of thing. In fact,
when I got home and told her I wanted us to do this next year, she
looked at me like I was from Mars. Sigh.
One woman had a really sweet looking white TQC, so I chatted with her
a bit. Turns out her husband was also there, a mechanic that works
not far from me, and coincidentally, the guy that had mantained that
84 4000SQ I was looking at a few months ago. I had tried to find
him at the time, but couldn't since he had moved. I'll add him to
the mechanics list with a caveat, since I haven't see his work.
For sale: there was a TQC as I mentioned, and a 1985 4000SQ with 128k
miles for $1995. I drove it, but it was in rough shape, with the
a/c compressor missing and some minor body work and things needed.
It was OK for the $, but knowing me, I would try to bring it back to
mint, so better to wait for another (nicer) car.
How many miles?!? There were 2 (at least) hi milage 4000Qs, one an
87 with 168k that looked like brand new, original paint and
interior, and a 1986 with 143k or so. Many cars seemed to be at or
over the 100k mark.
Porsche: most cars were quattros, with the exception of a yellow late
model RX7, a 1991 Jetta GLI 16v, and Steve Beddor's RUF Carerra 4.
When I say that he was lapping everyone, HE WAS LAPPING EVERYONE. :)
Sweet sounds: the drone of 5cyl engines being floored around the track
was wonderful. Such a unique sound, I had never really thought about
it until I heard so many of them.
The new A4: yes, believe it or not, the Audi reps were there with a 96
A4 V6 5speed. They didn't let anyone drive it, but I sat in it.
Trunk size is decent, the stereo is nice (and no longer DIN size) and
overall the car is gorgeous. I just may consider taking European
delivery of one next summer! The rep was really nice, gave me a cap,
tshirt, pen, etc. and said that if I wanted to place an order for
promo stuff, to give him a call. Shall we get together a group
purchase?
Pictures: took a whole roll, soon to be developed and perhaps scanned
in.
Quattro list: I made up flyers talking about the list and the internet,
and handed out quite a few. The Audi rep took one too :).
Kent Anderson was very interested in it and will be getting online
soon.
I think that covers it. Now to find other events close to me!
