Nahh, no marketing ploy - if they said you were safer with them
then they would be impyling you weren't safe with last years
model - ie airbags,  besides it doesn't help on CAFE, cost or
weight - maybe if they were visible from a passing glance
and looked cool - which reminds me of a survey done
by DESIGN ENGINERING a while back.  A wide spectrum
of engineers(>10 K) were polled as to what is most important to them
in a new car.  With one exception every group picked engine/
transmission - the one exception was automotive engineers
who picked interior cosmetic appearance.  Kind of explained 
alot .
