I had a similar problems (intermittent starting problems, an apparent 
weak battery) on my '83 TQC.  My solution may not be the right 
one for you but is certainly helped my Audi's starting probs.  Also, it 
may mitigate the need for an auto charger.  I added a large diameter  
ground strap from the alternater body to the chassis of the car.  I 
found a place near the head light assemby area that allowed a solid 
connection to the chassis.

In general I have found the wiring on my car to be substandard to support 
all the electrical demand.  For example, the electric window lifts are 
incredibly slow.  I notice on later models the wires to the lifts are 
larger and the motors are of higher capacity.
