I did this on my '81 4000 exactly three times: the last time, I was nearly
run over by the car because I had unintentionally left it in gear! It was
an amusing sight to see me running alongside the car as it was idling down
the street, hood still up, trying to open the door and jump in! I finally
leaned in through the window and turned off the key...
