5 cylinder mods

The 86 Quattro 4000cs

Well the valves are just a tap tap tappin'.    The engine runs OK, But....
If I were to get the hair brained idea of buying a wrecking yard 5 cylinder
to rebuild,

1). What would it set me back?

2). Are there any mild mods I could do to the engine that wouldn't throw
the fuel injection
    off, yet still give me more zip?

3). Am I looking at a kings ransom?

4). Has anyone out there in Audi land done this that would care to comment?

PS.. I have yet to get into any of the archives.  When trying to access
them, I get the "404 not found" message. Dan, help me. Thanks
