AHA! Ok, you tried to fit 215-*60*-15s? It makes sense that they would
be much too tall, the stock 215s are 50-series, much lower profile and
much smaller diamater.
You should be able to roll the rear inner fender lip without
damaging the paint. The new-style wide rear valence is
available as a replacement part, in fact the original narrower
one is NLA and Bentley spells out how to fit the late-model
piece to the earlier ur-Qs.
