Coolant temp sensor

I'd like to ask a bit of advice regarding the ECU wiring from the coolant
temperature sensor. When trying to track down the infamous 4000 rpm
shutoff, I checked for continuity from the temp sensor (front left of
engine) to the ECU. It is open, and the open seems to be between the
intermediate connector (near the fuse panel) and the ECU. The wiring in
the engine compartment seems OK.

The only thing I can think of is to slice open the gray sheath on the
wiring harness feeding the ECU connector and check it there. I don't like
the idea of doing this and having a taped up wiring harness afterward.

Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks for any tips.
