I'm kinda knew at this stuff so I could be way off base, BUT I think that you
want a wide beam pattern to get the smokey's on either side of the road, as
well as in front of you.  I believe a projector beam would project the IR way
off ahead of you, but be ineffective on the guns on the sides of the road close
to you.  Maybe a combination of a wide beam and a pencil beam to make sure them
smokey's can't see a thing no matter where they are would be the ticket...
