i think the decision of the "image" car was made which is why we have the a8. 
i've read that audi makes a loss on every a8 sold due to the engineering
startup costs associated with aliminum.  the decison to scrap the spyder was
because audi didn't want 2 "loss leaders".

btw, to the question about the wheel sizes on the standard a8, i checked and
they are 17" wheels (vs 18" for the sport model).  to reply to another poster,
yes i'm resident in wellington, nz and picked up the a8 info from a uk car mag
(performance car, aug '95).
