When I used to hot tale my adnoH XRC over Berthod pass in CO,
I used to use this technique extensively.  This is pass is famous
for always having some or LOTS of snowpack.  I added something to
the technique that I've never heard discussed.  I would wiggle the
wheel quickly backand forth, and could feel home much resistance
there was, giving me lots of traction information.  I think it 
doesn't work as well with boosted steering, or Quattro's?  Comments!
