Well, Audi was (I think) the first to use a hollow driveshaft on the 
input to the centre diff, allowing better packaging of the whole 4WD 
system.  Lets take that one step further, and build a hollow crankshaft, 
and run the front driveshaft up the middle!!  That would allow the engine 
to be mounted behind the front axle, and nice and low.
